Deck and Fence/ Staining and Finishing
Decks and fences are a beautiful statement as part of any property. The fence is the first thing that greets visitors and so much so that the white picket fence has become an American icon. Fences are the face your property presents to the world and a neglected fence is a sorry sight. Similarly decks are a source of pride whether residential or commercial and are an extension of living or customer space into the great outdoors. The problem is of course that any surfaces outdoors are exposed to the Californian weather and it's not just bad weather that causes damage. Sunshine is a real problem in this part of the world with UV rays particularly affecting wood and causing it to gray. So we like to think we don't just stain and finish your fences and decks, we breathe new life into them.
The first step in reinvigorating any outdoor woodwork, vinyl or metal fencing, and composite decking is to clean up the dirt and weathering that inevitably accrues. Deck cleaning removes dirt, stains, algae, and mildew and if graying has occurred due to UV exposure then we may need to lightly sand the top layer of a deck surface to restore it before we go ahead and seal or stain it. Some painting companies will expect to simply turn up with pressure washers to clean quickly but that involves the risk of damaging wood with badly applied pressure washing. We prefer to conduct an on site inspection to determine which areas can be pressure washed safely and which will require old fashioned manual treatment.
Sealing will waterproof a wooden surface but a clear sealer, while showing off the beauty of the wood, will not combat the effects of UV rays and in particular the graying effect. Tinted sealants may be a better bet and we have a wide range of sealants for you to choose from. That includes resurfacers – an alternative to traditional sealant that is thicker and may save more badly eroded surfaces.
Stain is a popular choice for decks and wooden fences not least because it is cheaper than paint and so for smaller budgets or larger areas that can prove decisive. It also maintains the natural wood look of decks and in particular is a great choice to highlight the natural wood grain. We can help you choose from a complete rainbow of colored stains to suit the look you are after and highlight the natural beauty of your wood.
For the best effects we always like to start our deck and fence painting by first treating any wood with a wood preservative and then a primer before applying the paint coat itself. Paint offers an unlimited range of colors and effects and will normally last longer than stain before requiring touch ups. In order to extend that period further we also like to finish our exterior deck and fence paint jobs with a coat of clear polyurethane sealer. Properly treated paint offers the best protection against the Californian sun which is an important consideration for our customers.
